Motorcycle Licence Tests – Mod 1 & Mod 2 Explained

Here's everything you need to know about the Module 1 and Module 2 motorcycle tests, including age requirements, test structure, and retest policies.

👤 Age Requirements
  • 24 and over: Eligible for full A licence training on unrestricted 650cc bikes.

  • 19–23: Can train on 650cc bikes restricted to 46 bhp for the A2 licence; upgrade after 2 years or at age 24.

  • 17–18: Limited to 125cc bikes and CBT-level riding only. Full licence not available until age 19.

🏍️ Module 1 – Off-Road Skills Test

Held at the Erith Test Centre, this 20-minute test assesses your control and manoeuvring skills in a safe, off-road area.

What’s included:

  • Slalom and figure of 8

  • Slow ride and U-turn

  • Controlled stop and emergency stop

  • Hazard avoidance (minimum speeds: 19 mph for mopeds, 31 mph for motorcycles)

Pass Criteria:

  • No serious or dangerous faults

  • No more than 5 minor faults

Retest Policy:

  • Free Mod 1 retest if you fail the first time

  • £75 + test fee for additional attempts

🚦 Module 2 – On-Road Riding Test

This 40-minute test evaluates your ability to ride safely in real traffic conditions.

What’s included:

  • Eyesight check (read a number plate from 20m)

  • “Show me, tell me” safety questions

  • Road riding and independent riding (10 minutes)

  • Angle starts and normal stops

Pass Criteria:

  • No serious or dangerous faults

  • No more than 10 minor faults

Retest Policy:

  • No free Mod 2 retest

  • Retest fee: £75 + test fee (far lower than some schools charging £250+)

  • Mod 1: Most students pass first time

  • Mod 2: 99% first-time pass rate

Tests are pre-booked in advance, with Mod 1 typically on Wednesday and Mod 2 the following Thursday—allowing time to rebook if needed.
