DG Rider Training

Motor bike test

Erith gillingham tonbridgewells sidcup

Motor bike training now has age groups, you need to be 24 years or over to take a big bike course which means learning on a bike of 650cc or more.

If you are between 19 and 24 you can take your test on one of our special 650cc bikes which we retricted for your training to 46 bhp allowing you to learn on a big bike you can then upgrade 2 years later or when you turn 24 which ever is soonest.

If you are between 17- 18 you can only test on a 125cc bike and only ride a 125cc bike so probably best wait until you turn 19, its up to you. Of course if you want to take passengers then you will need to pass the test first.

The tests we do

Module 1 off-road test: what happens?

You’ll take the module 1 test in an off-road motorcycle manoeuvring area.

The test normally takes about 20 minutes and includes:

  • Wheeling the moped or motorcycle and using the stand
  • Riding a slalom and figure of 8
  • A slow ride
  • A U-turn
  • Cornering and controlled stop
  • Cornering and emergency stop
  • Cornering and hazard avoidance

For the hazard avoidance and emergency stop exercises you must ride at a minimum speed of:

  • 19 mph on a moped
  • 31 mph on a motorcycle

 Your test result

You’ll be told if you have passed module 1 at the end of the test.

The examiner will make notes of:

  • Dangerous faults – these involve actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property.
  • Serious faults – these are potentially dangerous
  • Riding faults – these are potentially dangerous, but could become serious if you keep making mistakes

You’ll pass module 1 if you make:

  • No serious or dangerous faults (sometimes called ‘majors’)
  • No more than 5 riding faults (sometimes called ‘minors’)

 If you pass

 The examiner will:

  • Tell you the faults you have made, if any
  • Give you a pass certificate – you need to take this to the module 2 test

 If you don’t pass

If you do fail the Mod 1 test we will give you a free second go, if you mess up a second time all Mod 1 tests after that will cost £75 per go plus test fee.  We will rebook your Mod 2 as required.

Module 2 on-road test: what happens?

You must pass module 1 before you can take the module 2 test.

The module 2 test normally takes about 40 minutes and includes:

  •  An eye test
  • ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
  • Road riding
  • Independent riding

You must bring module 1 pass certificate to the module 2 test, plus all the documents you had to bring to the module 1 test

Eyesight check

You’ll have to read a number plate from a distance:

  • 20 metres from vehicles with a new-style number plate
  • 20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate

You will fail your riding test if you fail your eyesight check

 ‘Show me, tell me’ questions

You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions know as the ‘show me tell me’ questions. These test that you know how to carry out basic safety checks.

Road riding

You’ll drive in various road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways. You’ll be asked to carry out:

  • Normal stops
  • An angle start (pulling out from behind a parked vehicle)

The examiner will give you directions using a radio. They’ll normally follow you on a motorcycle.

Driving test routes aren’t published, so you can’t check tem before your test.

Independent riding

You’ll have about 10 minutes of independent riding. This is designed to assess your ability to ride safely while making your own decisions.

You can ask the instructor to repeat the directions if you forget them – you won’t fail the test if you go off route. You can’t use a sat nav.

Your test result

You’ll be told if you’ve passed module 2 at the end of the test.

The examiner will make a note of:

  • Dangerous faults – these involve actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property
  • Serious fault – these are potential dangerous
  • Riding faults – these aren’t potential dangerous, but could become serious if you keep making the same mistake

You’ll pass module 2 if you make

  • No serious or dangerous faults (sometimes called ‘majors’)
  • No more than 10 riding faults (sometimes called ‘minors’)

If you pass your test

 The examiner will:

  • Tell you what faults you made, if any
  • Give you a pass certificate
  • Ask you if you want your full licence to be sent to you automatically – give the examiner your provisional licence if you want to do this

If you don’t pass your test

You have to book another module 2 and pay again. You have to choose a date at least 10 working day away.

We do not give you a free retest for Mod 2 But we only charge the test fee plus £75 to cover costs. Some other companies charge in excess of £250 per mod 2 retest.

Once module one has been completed you will be able to take module 2 and taken out on the road for the driving test, mod 1 will be taken usually on the Wednesday, mod 2 on the following thursday allowing time to cancel and rebook your Mod 2 test should you make a mistake and mess up the Mod 1 test, this is due to the high cost of the Mod 2 test.

So far this year almost everyone has passed their Mod one 1st time and a 99% first time pass rate for Mod 2.
